Tigray Interim Government, on Sunday, failed to hold public meetings in two cities amid ongoing political dispute between two TPLF factions.
Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Tigray’s ruling party, is split in two factions. Tigray Interim Government chief Getachew Reda is leading one faction. Rival TPLF faction is being led by Debretsion Gebremichael. Both groups have been trying to administer different zones of Tigray.
Tigray Interim Government has been trying to enforce its writ in areas controlled by TPLF Debretsion group. The interim government had announced to hold public meetings in Abiy Adi and Aksum cities today. But the meetings could not be conducted. Reportedly, TPLF Debretsion group activists disrupted both meetings.
On Wednesday, a similar public meeting, called by Tigray interim government in Adigrat city, was disrupted by women protesters from rival TPLF Debretsion group.
TPLF Debretsion is demanding the removal of Getachew Reda, Tigray interim president. Getachew Reda has refused to step down, vowing to lead the interim government until next election.
