The Tigray region’s land and mineral office plans to deliver 800 kilograms of gold to the national bank this fiscal year, 2017. Fiseha Girmay, the region’s communications director, shared that the office is implementing measures to ensure legal mining operations.
Fiseha Girmay acknowledged that security issues had previously limited mining income. However, he mentioned that improvements have been made to address these challenges. In addition to the gold, Tigray plans to supply 60 kilograms of sapphire ore to the market.
The office aims to generate 35 million birr in revenue from mining activities. This revenue will support construction materials and various industrial and decorative minerals. Following the Pretoria Peace Agreement, the office is also working to integrate former militants into the mining sector in an organized way.
Fiseha Girmay emphasized the importance of enhancing the mining sector to boost the economy. The office has introduced regulations for investors seeking permits. He believes that following these rules will help achieve the expected revenue.
