Tigist Gezahegn made history by winning a gold medal in the women’s 1500m T13 event at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. The 27-year-old athlete finished the race with an impressive time of 4:22:39, narrowly defeating Moroccan runner El Idrisi Fatima in a thrilling finish.

This remarkable victory marks Gezahegn’s second gold medal in the same event, as she previously triumphed at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Her success in Paris solidifies her status as one of Ethiopia’s most accomplished Paralympic athletes.

This win of Tigist Gezahegn highlights the strong performance of the Ethiopian Paralympic team, which also featured athletes Tamirat Kefiyalew and Gemechu Amenu.

Tigist Gezahegn faced numerous obstacles on her journey to the top. In 2016, she represented Ethiopia at the Rio Olympics but did not advance past the first round. An Achilles tendon injury later forced her to switch from track events to road racing, with medical experts initially doubting her ability to return to competition.

However, Gezahegn’s determination and hard work paid off. She won five races and set personal bests in the half marathon and 10K events leading up to the Paris Paralympics. Her silver medal in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Olympics, where she finished just three seconds behind gold medalist Sifan Hassan, further demonstrated her world-class abilities.
