As Ethiopia’s largest commercial bank, the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has been implementing various strategies to boost its performance and customer satisfaction. In addition to physical expansion, CBE has been promoting digital banking solutions. This focus on technology aligns with global banking trends.

Recently, CBE faced a significant challenge when a system glitch allowed customers to withdraw more money than they had in their accounts, resulting in unauthorized withdrawals of 801,417,747 birr. The bank is currently working to recoup these funds and prevent similar incidents in the future. CBE announced that they have recovered 795,531,754 birr, which is 99.27% of the total amount.

As part of Ethiopia’s banking sector, CBE operates under the oversight of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), which recently unveiled a new 3-year strategy aimed at addressing macroeconomic challenges and fostering stability in the financial sector.

The upcoming service fee adjustments are likely part of CBE’s ongoing efforts to balance operational costs with customer needs while maintaining its competitive edge in the Ethiopian banking sector. Customers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new fee structure to understand how it may affect their banking activities and to make informed decisions about their financial transactions with the bank.
