The South West Ethiopian Peoples Regional Council approved a budget of 17.6 billion birr for the fiscal year 2017. Yezazhet Belayneh, chairperson of the Standing Committee on Budget and Finance, presented the draft budget to the council.
Yezazhet explained that the proposed South West Ethiopian budget will come from a mix of regional revenue, federal government subsidies, and other income sources. Yezazhet Belayneh detailed that these sources include contributions from the federal government, foreign aid, funding related to Sustainable Development Goals, regular income, revenues from health institutions, municipal income, school fees, and donations from telethons.
Members of the House of Representatives actively discussed the detailed draft budget. Dr. Engineer Negash Wagesho addressed the comments and concerns raised by parliament members, stating that the region should effectively utilize its revenue options to ensure the successful implementation of the 2017 budget.
The regional communication bureau emphasized the need to prioritize humanitarian issues in the budget and to follow financial guidelines and regulations to prevent theft, waste, and mismanagement.
