In Addis Ababa, Sidama Region Coffee, Fruits, and Spices Authority officials announced coffee production plans. They aim to supply over 36,000 tons of coffee to the central market. They expect to earn around $200 million from coffee exports this year.
Mesfin Kare, the authority’s Director General, stated that farmers cultivate coffee on 170,000 hectares in the region. Currently, 142,000 hectares are actively farmed. With effective agricultural practices, each hectare can produce about 11 quintals of coffee. This year’s harvest is projected to reach 1.5 million quintals.
The plan includes supplying more than 36,100 tons of washed coffee to the central market. The Sidama region will collect 204,000 tons of ground coffee to achieve this while ensuring high quality. Of the exported coffee, 89% will be washed, and 11% will be dry processed.
They expect 75% of washed coffee to be first-grade, 24% second-grade, and only 1% third-grade.
Moreover, Ethiopia generated over $196 million in August 2024 from coffee exports. The country sold 42,322 tons of coffee to the international market, setting a new record. Dr. Adugna Debela, the director general of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, reported a significant increase in revenue of 143% and 165% in volume compared to previous periods.
