Number of public transport users is declining in Ethiopia. It was stated by the Ethiopian Transport Association. Birhane Zeru, President of the Ethiopian Transport Association, today said the number of travelers using public transport in the country is decreasing.

The decline in road travel is being attributed to the security situation in the country which remains fragile. In Amhara and Oromia regions, active armed conflicts are ongoing. Roads are blocked frequently. Fano in Amhara and OLA in Oromia call for road blocks.

Armed gangs are operating on Wereta-Woldia road. Several incidents have been reported in which vehicles were stopped and passengers were robbed of their belongings. Passengers say that they are avoiding road travel due to the escalation of restrictions and attacks.

More and more travelers, who can afford, are turning to air travel. The CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, Mesfin Tasew announced last week that the number of Ethiopian airline domestic passengers had risen by 34 percent compared to the same period last year.
