The Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Continuous Communication, along with regional and city trade bureaus, is actively addressing illegal trading practices that have emerged following the country’s macroeconomic reforms. Minister Kasahun Gofe (Dr) has evaluated the initiatives underway in various regions with members of the National Trade Institutions Anti-Illegal Trade and Market Control Joint Committee.
He announced that the authorities are conducting ongoing operations to combat illegal trade, with plans to maintain these efforts in the near future. Just today, officials seized illegal products from 967 businesses, resulting in nine businesses losing their licenses and two companies being completely shut down. Furthermore, 49 traders who have refused to change their illegal practices have received prison sentences.
Yesterday, the Ethiopian Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration shared that they have revoked the licenses of 542 businesses and suspended their operations due to unjustified price hikes, while 324 others received warnings. Read More…
In total, the authorities have taken action against 2,202 business establishments, suspending 18 trade licenses and canceling six. The Ministry has also issued warnings to 87 traders who are unwilling to rectify their illegal activities.
