The United States has decided to extend its sanctions against Ethiopia. President Joe Biden stated that the ongoing crisis in Northern Ethiopia threatens U.S. national interests. The U.S. has pushed for an end to the conflict that began three years ago.
Although the African Union negotiated a peace agreement in Pretoria, South Africa, the U.S. has maintained the sanctions on Ethiopia. Ongoing human rights violations continue to be a concern. These abuses affect not only Ethiopia but also East Africa and the United States.
Washington first imposed national emergency sanctions in September 2021 for two years. Last year, President Biden signed an extension. The White House recently announced that the sanctions will continue for another year, lasting until September 2025.
In his letter about the extension, Biden noted that the situation in Northern Ethiopia remains unchanged and poses a threat to both East African and U.S. foreign policy interests.
