The Indian Embassy in Ethiopia has stopped issuing medical visas to Ethiopians. No official statement has been issued by the embassy so far. But several applicants complain that their applications for medical visas are not being entertained by the Indian Embassy in Addis Ababa.
Though no formal statement has been issued by the embassy on this issue, some embassy officials, on condition of anonymity, say that the step has been taken due to forged documents being submitted by visa applicants. The officials say that some visa applicants do not want to return to their country, rather they want to go to other countries from India.
The Indian embassy had authorized one company to handle the cases of Ethiopians seeking medical visa from the embassy. But the company office, located in Addis Ababa, was closed down by the security forces this week.
India has the largest pool of clinicians in South Asia. Medical tourism in India is a growing sector within the country’s economy. In 2022, India’s medical tourism sector was estimated to be worth US$9 billion. Approximately 2 million patients visit India each year from 78 countries
