Ethiopia and Finland have signed an agreement to improve teacher education in Ethiopia. Finland will provide a five-million-euro grant, equivalent to approximately 313 million Ethiopian Birr, to support this effort. The grant will be used to enhance the quality and inclusivity of teaching programs. This project aims to make a positive impact on education in Ethiopia from 2025 to 2028.
Ms. Semereta Sewasew, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance, signed the grant agreement with Mr. Ville Tavio, Finland’s Minister for Foreign Trade and Development.
The project enhances teacher education by developing teachers’ skills and knowledge in inclusive education. This is achieved through training programs for new teachers and enhancing the practical and theoretical understanding of inclusive education methods.
The project’s success will depend on several factors, including the quality of the training programs, the level of engagement from teachers and students, and the availability of resources. However, with the support of the Finnish government and the expertise of Finnish educators, the project has the potential to make a significant positive impact on the education system in Ethiopia.
Finland and Ethiopia have a long-standing partnership that began in the 1960s. Finland has been a significant partner in Ethiopia’s development, providing support in areas such as agriculture, forestry, and education. Additionally, Finland has worked to promote democratic principles and human rights in Ethiopia.
Additionally, Finland helps Ethiopia achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of global goals aimed at ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring peace and prosperity for all.
The partnership between the Finnish and Ethiopian governments has expanded over time to include politics, commerce, and economic cooperation. Finland aims to deepen its ties with Africa and increase its trade with the continent, intending to double its trade with Africa by 2030. To achieve this goal, Finland will increase its investments in Africa and encourage African companies to invest in Finland.
