Ethiopian Police today arrested killed OLF leader’s immediate family members. The OLF leader was found dead on Wednesday.
The dead body of Battee Urgeessaa, the head of the political wing of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), was found in the outskirts of Meqi town in East Shewa zone of the Oromia region. The dead body had several bullet wounds and torture marks.
Battee Urgeessaa, originally from Meki town, was staying at a hotel in the town from where he was taken and shot dead. Immediately after the news of his death came out, Oromo Liberation Army OLA accused government forces of having assassinated the politician. While OLF called for impartial investigation.
Oromia government yesterday rejected OLA’s accusations, calling it an attempt to politicize the incident. Dilboo Urgeessaa, Meki town mayor, yesterday pointed the finger at the deceased’s family, implying that a family dispute could be the reason behind Battee’s murder.
After the funeral of Battee Urgeesssaa in Meki town, Ethiopian police detained immediate family members of the OLF’s senior leader. Milo Urgeessa (Battee’s sister) and Simbo Urgeessaa (Battee’s brother) have been taken into custody by Oromia region forces.
It remains to be seen if Battee Urgeessaa’s family members have any hand in his death or not. Government critics allege that Oromia region and Ethiopian federal government want to muddy the waters to hide and protect real killers.
