The Ethiopian federal govt today announced that there is no specific responsibility or obligation that it took in the Pretoria Agreement regarding the legal status and registration of the TPLF. It asked Tigray People’s Liberation Front to respect country’s constitutions and laws.
On Friday, the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) issued a registration certificate to the TPLF in accordance with the revised election proclamation. In a statement issued by the Ethiopian National Election Board, it rejected TPLF’s request for reinstatement and decided to register it under special circumstances. TPLF rejected the decision made by the Election Board and called a violation of Pretoria Agreement.
Following this, the Government Communication Service issued a statement today. “When the Pretoria agreement was concluded, the federal government’s obligation under the agreement was to facilitate the process to lift the TPLF’s terrorism status,” the statement said. The Federal Government announced it has no specific responsibilities or obligations in the Pretoria Agreement regarding the legal status and registration of the TPLF.
The government also announced in its statement that the TPLF is obliged to respect the country’s constitution, laws, federal institutions and other constitutional institutions according to Article 7 (1) (A) of the Pretoria Agreement.
“Therefore, it is clear that the TPLF has an obligation to work in compliance with the country’s political parties registration law and the authority of the Election Board,” the government said..
TPLF which has rejected NEBE’s decision is planning to hold a controversial party congress on Tuesday. Around 1/3 of party’s central committee members are boycotting the congress. Ethiopian Prime Minister last month warned TPLF against holding the congress. The party is witnessing the worst internal divisions. Two groups have emerged in the party. One is led by Tigray interim president Getachew Reda and the other by Tigray’s senior leaders including TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael.
