The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority has announced an achievement of highest price. During the fourth Cup of Excellence international auction, bidders purchased a kilogram of Ethiopian coffee for over 102,000 birr. This Ethiopian coffee price sets a new record, marking the highest ever recorded in local competitions and international benchmarks.
The coffee tasting event took place four times in the past seven months. This year, the online auction featured 4,870 different price points for the competing coffees. One kilogram sold for approximately 980.64 dollars, which equals more than 102,000 birr.
Dr. Adugna Debala, the Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, explained that the Ballyu Gasa coffee competition started five years ago. Its goal is to help coffee farmers gain recognition and benefit from their hard work.
Looking ahead, he announced that the fifth Cup of Excellence coffee competition will take place in 2025. Dr. Debala expressed optimism that the upcoming competition will showcase many coffee farmers.
Moreover, last month, the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority shared the export figures for the previous fiscal year. They reported that Ethiopia shipped out 298,500 tons of coffee, generating a substantial $1.43 billion in revenue.
