The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority started an initiative to offer incentives for the investors to promote the industry. Mr. Shimelis Abdisa, the head of the Oromia regional administration, announced the incentives for the investors in the Ethiopian coffee industry. He shared that the government would provide free land and loans to investors in coffee grinding and washing facilities. The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture launched a movement to improve coffee productivity and quality in Nekemte city.
Dr. Adugna Debela, director of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, reported increased coffee production. Recently, 2,000 farmers received trade permits to export coffee directly. Now, 60% of Ethiopia’s coffee is classified as specialty coffee. The country is working to streamline negotiations for its coffee in the New York international auction market.
The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority announced the export figures for the previous fiscal year 2016. They reported that the Ethiopian coffee industry shipped out 298,500 tons of coffee, generating a substantial $1.43 billion in revenue.
The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority plans to export 326,000 tons of coffee in the current fiscal year. In Oromia, out of 391,793 quintals produced that year, 57,811 quintals were washed and 233,944 unwashed, totaling 290,755 quintals released into the market.
