Last week, a domestic flight (ET154) of Ethiopian Airlines, flying from Hawassa to Addis Ababa, encountered a smoke problem during the flight. As the plane was in the air, the crew noticed smoke coming into the passenger cabin. The aircraft was able to land safely at the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa. All the passengers were able to get off the plane at the assigned gate without reporting any issues.
After that, an investigation was ordered to determine the cause of the Ethiopian Airlines smoke incident.
Today, the CEO of the airline Mr. Mesfin Tasew, said that the Ethiopian Airlines smoke incident was not caused by fire or any other serious issue. Instead, it was due to a problem with the oil on the plane. He added that the oil was leaking from the plane, and this caused some smoke to appear. He assured that this type of incident is not uncommon and can happen occasionally.
Last month, the CEO, Mesfin Tasew, said that the airline was expecting around 3.5 million domestic passengers by the end of the current budget year, which ends in June. This is an increase of 34.6% from last year’s passenger number. Last year, 2.6 million domestic passengers traveled with Ethiopian Airlines. The airline is seeing a gradual rise in domestic passenger numbers.
To handle the growing number of travelers, Ethiopian Airlines is planning to build a new airport 40 km outside Addis Ababa. This new airport will have four times the capacity of the current Bole International Airport. Ethiopian Airlines is also expanding its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services with two new hangars, a component repair complex, and a modern parts warehouse. Read More….
