Ethiopian Airlines Increases Flight Prices After Economic Reforms

Ethiopian Airlines has recently increased its flight prices significantly. Reportedly, the primary reason is the fluctuating market value of the US dollar. Customers argue that the price hikes are unjustified given the current market value of the USD and rising jet fuel costs.

The rapidly declining value of birr has created shockwaves in the business community. The government says that it will ensure financial stability to help the business community.

Moreover, the decline of birr began after the Ethiopian government introduced macro economic reforms on Sunday to get a financial bailout package from the IMF and World Bank. The two financial institutions pledged to give around $20 billion to the Ethiopian government over the next 10 years.

Ethiopian Airlines has not provided a clear explanation for these substantial flight prices increase, which have affected both international and domestic routes. For example, the return ticket from Addis Ababa to Dubai has skyrocketed from around 40,000 Birr to 87,000 Birr, while the fare for a return ticket from Addis Ababa to Winnipeg, Canada, has surged from approximately 116,000 Birr to 206,000 Birr. The fare for a ticket from Addis Ababa to Washington DC has escalated from 59,000 Birr to 95,000 Birr

Domestic flights have also seen considerable price hikes. The cost of a one-way ticket from Gondar to Addis Ababa has risen from 4,600 Birr to 5,793 Birr. Even short-term travel plans are affected, as seen with the price for a flight from Addis Ababa to Asmara, which has increased from 87,000 Birr to 108,000 Birr.

The lack of transparency from Ethiopian Airlines regarding these pricing strategies has led to frustration and disappointment among travelers. Many feel that the airline should provide a clear justification for the price hikes, especially in light of the economic challenges faced by consumers.
