Ethiopian Airlines has taken a significant step forward by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ethiopia National ID Program (NIDP) to use Fayda ID for biometric travel. This partnership will allow the Fayda ID to be used as a travel document for domestic flights. The initiative aims to enhance the passenger experience and improve operational efficiency through biometric passenger processing.

The Fayda ID is Ethiopia’s new national identification system. By accepting Fayda ID for travel, Ethiopian Airlines simplifies the process for passengers. Travelers can now use their Fayda IDs during check-in, security checks, and boarding. This change promotes digital identity solutions and makes domestic travel more manageable for everyone.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to introduce biometric passenger processing. This technology will transform how passengers interact with airline services. Here’s how it will work:

  • Easy booking: Passengers can link their Fayda ID to their flight bookings.
  • Quick check-in: Self-service kiosks and mobile apps will speed up the check-in process.
  • Smooth security and boarding: Biometric verification will streamline security checks and boarding, reducing delays.

This approach enhances convenience and improves efficiency at airports.

The collaboration between Ethiopian Airlines and NIDP aligns with global trends in air travel. Many airlines are adopting biometric systems to create seamless travel experiences. Ethiopian Airlines is positioning itself as a leader in this transformation within Africa.

At the start of this month, Addis Ababa launched a campaign for the Fayda digital ID. The National ID Program Office and the Addis Ababa City Administration are teaming up to conduct this registration through the Civil Registration and Resident Service Agency.
