Ethiopian Airlines Accepts the Demand of Somalia

Ethiopian Airlines has changed the name of its Hargeisa destination on its website, changing the listing from “Hargeisa” to “Hargeisa, Somalia.” This decision comes in response to a directive from the Somali Civil Aviation Authority, which emphasized the importance of recognizing Hargeisa as part of the Somali state.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Somalia issued a directive to Ethiopian Airlines, stating that the previous designation of “Hargeisa” violated the country’s territorial integrity. They set a deadline of August 23 for the airline to make the necessary changes, threatening to restrict flights to Somalia if the airline failed to comply.

Ethiopian Airlines requested an extension on the deadline, but the Somali official rejected the plea, asserting that two days were sufficient for the airline to make the corrections.

Previously, Ethiopian Airlines had changed the destination name from “Hargeisa, Somaliland” to simply “Hargeisa.” However, in light of the recent directive, the airline has changed it again to show that Hargeisa is in Somalia, like the Somali authorities wanted.

The dispute is resolved, and Somalia welcomes the decision by Ethiopian Airlines to correct sovereignty violations.
