Ethiopian Airline today defended ticket price hike introduced on Sunday. The ticket prices for international and domestic flights of the airline have gone up. Especially international flights fare has almost doubled.
The Ethiopian Airline today defended the increase in ticket prices. “All international ticket prices are pegged to the dollar. We use the Ethiopian Commercial Bank exchange rate for the tickets we sell,” it said.
According to the Ethiopian commercial bank’s new foreign exchange rates, Ethiopian currency birr has dropped around 75% against dollar. The foreign currency exchange rates changed after the government announced new macro economic reforms last week.
The return ticket from Addis Ababa to Dubai has skyrocketed from around 40,000 Birr to 87,000 Birr, while the fare for a return ticket from Addis Ababa to Winnipeg, Canada, has surged from approximately 116,000 Birr to 206,000 Birr. The fare for a ticket from Addis Ababa to Washington DC has escalated from 59,000 Birr to 95,000 Birr. Domestic flights tickets also recorded around 30% increase.
