Ethiopia is introducing a new law to regulate fuel market. A draft law was presented to the Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives yesterday, which includes prison terms and fines for “oil marketing actors” found to have committed illegal acts. The draft has been prepared “to regulate the trading system of petroleum products”.
The Illegal acts that can result in imprisonment of 3 to 7 years and confiscation of oil products are listed in the draft.
- One of the acts that lead to imprisonment for up to 7 years is “Intentional mixing of petroleum products with foreign substances for marketing”.
- Another crime punishable by 3 to 7 years is “smuggling oil products to a neighboring country”.
- A person “caught while transporting oil products outside the authorized shipping line” and “unloading outside the authorized unloading” will be imprisoned for 3 to 7 years.
- Oil products that were transported by individuals involved in these actions will be confiscated.
- “Storage of fuel products outside the approved area; found being sold outside of the person, place and trading system to which it is to be sold, or found being sold in dangerous containers as determined by regulations”: In addition to simple imprisonment of not more than 3 years, oil products will be confiscated.
- “Without obtaining written permission from the appropriate body, a person caught selling fuel products in areas where there are no fuel stations will also be held accountable.
