The Council of Ministers of Ethiopia has introduced new regulations and penalties under the reformed Road and Transport Traffic Authority. According to these rules, any driver who causes damage to property while operating a vehicle will incur a fine of 1,600 birr. In cases where a driver commits an offense resulting in minor physical injuries, their driving license will be suspended for six months.
If the offense leads to severe injuries, the driver will face a fine and a one-year license suspension. Furthermore, if a driver is involved in an incident that results in a fatality, their license will also be suspended for one year.
These measures aim to enhance road safety and hold drivers accountable for their actions. By imposing stricter penalties, the Road and Transport Traffic Authority of Ethiopia hopes to deter reckless behavior on the roads and encourage responsible driving practices. The goal is to create a safer environment for all road users, reduce accidents, and promote a culture of respect and caution among drivers.
Moreover, the authorities of Ethiopia asked drivers to renew their licenses. The process has started on October 10, 2024. This requirement applies to all licenses except new ones and those held by individuals over 55.
