The Immigration and Nationality Service of Ethiopia has increased the passport renewal period for individuals over 25 years old from five to ten years. This change aims to reduce the number of renewals for this age group.
In a recent statement, Director General Selamawit Dawit reported on the quarterly performance for the 2017 fiscal year. He highlighted improvements in the efficiency and convenience of services at land and air checkpoints. The service processed over 1.1 million passengers in just three months.
Dawit also mentioned efforts to tackle capacity challenges. He noted that 125 university students completed a month-long training program to enhance workforce organization. During this quarter, Ethiopia issued 357,000 passport out of 478,000 available booklets, achieving a 97.2% implementation rate.
Furthermore, Dawit reported that 259,705 customers used the e-Visa service during this period. He expressed a commitment to developing a technology-driven system in the future. Moreover, Ethiopia plans to launch e-passport services starting next January.
