Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently announced plans for a new airport in Ethiopia. This airport will be the largest in Africa, with a capacity to handle 130 million passengers annually. The Prime Minister shared this vision during the 3rd regular meeting of the 6th House of Representatives.

The new airport of Ethiopia will be 40 kilometers from Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport. It will ease congestion at the current airport and enhance Ethiopia’s position as a major aviation hub. A train will connect the two airports, making travel between them easy and efficient.

Benefits of the New Airport

Increased capacity: The airport will accommodate 130 million passengers annually.

Job creation: The project will create thousands of jobs and boost the local economy.

Global connectivity: It will strengthen Ethiopia’s ties to international markets.

Sustainability: The design will focus on environmentally friendly practices.

Abiy Ahmed emphasized that strong air transport facilities are essential for landlocked countries like Ethiopia. The new airport will support Ethiopian Airlines in expanding its operations and reputation. Ethiopian Airlines already leads Africa’s aviation sector and aims to enhance its status further with this new infrastructure.

Construction is set to begin soon, with the first phase expected to finish by 2029. This phase will allow for an initial capacity of 60 million passengers, with plans for future expansions. The project represents a significant investment of around $6 billion.
