Ethio Telecom, in partnership with Visa Inc., has launched the first wallet-based Virtual Visa Card in Ethiopia. This collaboration aims to provide convenient digital financial services to Ethiopians.
Ethio Telecom has enabled Visa cardholders from over 190 countries to send money to Ethiopia through the Telebirr virtual card number.
To receive money via Visa Direct, customers must first register for the Virtual Visa service using the Telebirr SuperApp. They can then share their 16-digit virtual Visa card number with the sender, and the money will reach them within one hour.
You can download the Telebirr SuperApp from https://apps.ethiotelecom.et/apps/telebirr
Moreover, Ethio Telecom has allowed Ethiopians residing abroad to send money instantly to their friends and relatives’ Telebirr mobile numbers. This service is facilitated by the newly developed Telebirr Remit App, which customers can install on their mobile devices.
Furthermore, currently, customers can receive remittances from nine countries: the USA, Canada, Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the UK, South Africa, Italy, and Sweden.
Telebirr had 47.55 million subscribers who made transactions worth 1.81 trillion birr in the 2023/24 fiscal year alone. The total value of transactions since its launch has reached 2.55 trillion birr. To apply for a virtual Visa card, customers can install the updated Telebirr SuperApp and select the “Visa” option.
