Drivers in Addis Ababa report harassment due to a severe gasoline shortage at local gas stations. Officials from the oil and energy sector are investigating the cause of this crisis.
One of the local drivers shared that he noted long lines for fuel across the city, with many stations completely dry. He spent over two hours waiting to refuel, which affected his work.
One more driver also showed these concerns. The driver observed that most gas stations lack gasoline, leading to long queues at those without fuel. The driver expressed frustration about waiting until one o’clock in the afternoon in the Kebena area.
Getachew Amonye, Director of Oil Products Distribution and Control at the Oil and Energy Authority, confirmed the reports of a gasoline shortage in Addis Ababa. He stated that ongoing refining operations aim to address the fuel crisis.
According to designated quotas, Addis Ababa should receive up to 1.4 million liters of gasoline daily. Getachew mentioned that officials are working with their Djibouti counterparts to ensure a steady supply of petrol to meet the city’s demands.
He acknowledged the need to investigate why certain areas experienced shortages.
Getachew highlighted recent efforts to combat illegal fuel distribution. Authorities seized over 20,000 liters intended for unauthorized sale. He assured that monitoring activities would continue and urged gas stations to manage fuel sales responsibly.
