A boat carrying more than 50 Ethiopians sank off Djibouti’s coast. The Ethiopian Embassy in Djibouti issued a statement in this regard on Monday.
Tens of thousands of Ethiopians every year move from Ethiopia, off Djibouti’s coast towards Middle Eastern countries. These illegal migrants mostly enter Yemen by sea and from there they risk their lives to enter Saudi Arabia.
The boat carrying illegal migrants capsized off the coast of north eastern part of Djibouti. Around 35 lost their lives. UN agency on migration and Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti have confirmed the incident.
These illegal Ethiopian migrants face multiple challenges on their way to the Middle East. Last year, Human Rights Watch published a report stating that Saudi Arabian border forces were responsible for killing hundreds of Ethiopian migrants who tried to enter KSA illegally.
Interesting, a senior Ethiopian delegation is visiting Saudi Arabia these days. The delegation is in talks with Saudi authorities to bring back more than 50,000 illegal migrants who are imprisoned in Saudi Arabia.
