The amount allocated for daily food expenses for Ethiopian university students has been increased. This is due to the increase in food prices. The 22 Birr that was allotted to a student before has been increased to 100 Birr today.
It has been decided that the food menu of all the educational establishments will be the same.
In the past, although the quality varied from campus to campus, university cafes fed thousands of graduating students year after year. Despite the quality issue, in view of the large number of students, institutions were feeding different types of food to students.
Ethiopian Universities have been requesting the government to raise the daily food expense for students for more than a year. In the last 2 years, food prices skyrocketed in Ethiopia. Several universities were relying on financial support from volunteers to feed students.
