Alibaba to Launch AliExpress E-Commerce Platform in Ethiopia

Alibaba Group, the renowned Chinese e-commerce giant, announced its plans to introduce the AliExpress platform in Ethiopia. During a forum in Addis Ababa, Alibaba representatives engaged with Ethiopian government officials to discuss the launch.

AliExpress, a subsidiary of Alibaba, reached an agreement with the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia to begin trading operations in the country. The Ethiopian government believes that AliExpress will empower local consumers and businesses to engage in global trade, enhancing Ethiopia’s presence in the international market.

On August 7, 2024, a virtual meeting was held between Ethiopian officials and an Alibaba team led by Chandee Zhuang, Senior Advisor at Alibaba Global Initiatives. To support this venture, Ethiopian Airlines has established a logistics center that will facilitate internet shopping services provided by AliExpress in Ethiopia. This infrastructure will streamline the process for Ethiopian consumers to access a wide range of products from around the world.

In a broader context, the Ethiopian government has implemented reforms to encourage foreign investment, allowing international companies to participate in both retail and wholesale trade. This policy shift aims to attract foreign players like Alibaba, bringing innovative solutions and expertise to the Ethiopian market.
