Addis Ababa shared the development plan for new corridors, which is the second phase. In the second phase of the corridor development project, Addis Ababa will see the development of eight new corridors, covering a total length of 132 kilometres. The city has allocated a budget of 5 billion birr to compensate homeowners whose private residences will be affected by this initiative.
During a recent press briefing, Mayor Adanech Abebe detailed the project’s plans. The first corridor will connect Kazanchis, Meskel Square, Mexico, and Churchill. The second corridor will link Southgate to Meskel Square, while the third will extend from CMC to Summit Goro, Bole VIP Terminal, and the New Africa International Convention Exhibition Center.
The fourth corridor will traverse from Anbessa Garage through Jacros Goro. The fifth corridor will connect Sarbet to Karl Square, Bisrate Gebriel, Abo Roundabout, Lafto Square, and Furi Square. Meanwhile, the sixth corridor will develop at Arat Kilo and Shiromeda. The seventh corridor will focus on the Kebena River bank, and the eighth will run along the Entoto Peacock River bank.
This ambitious project aims to cover 2,817 hectares in total. In addition to compensating displaced homeowners, the city plans to provide 100 hectares of replacement land and two years of rent payments.
The initiative also includes plans for housing, commercial spaces, and schools for children in these areas. Mayor Adanech emphasized that thorough preparations are in place to ensure the success of this extensive development effort.
