The peace and order administration office in Addis Ababa has announced a ban on betting in the city. Mr. Mideksa Kebede, the deputy head of the bureau, revealed that they closed down 4,118 betting houses during the previous fiscal year, and there will be no more betting or betting establishments allowed in Addis Ababa.
The authorities explained their reasons for the ban. Betting is damaging children’s brains, and people are stealing goods from their homes to fund their gambling habits. They have also received complaints about gambling causing marriage disputes.
The administration has taken action. They have ordered those working in the betting industry to change their jobs, and they prohibit landlords from renting to betting houses for any business or service.
Moreover, the country’s primary gambling law, the National Lottery Administration Re-Establishment Regulation 2009, permits a sports-betting lottery to accept bets on sports competitions. The more recent Sports-Betting Lottery Directive No. 172/2021, which came into effect in September 2021, introduced new sector-specific rules for sports betting.
