Addis Ababa Police Arrest Two Suspects in Fake Money Scheme

Addis Ababa police have found a fake money operation and are looking into it. Officers from the Lafto sub city police department arrested a man who tried to buy something with fake money in Woreda 12. Even though he tried to hide with 400 fake Birr notes, police caught him in the act while they were watching.

When Addis Ababa police searched his home, they discovered 17,200 fake money Birr notes. Based on what they found, they also arrested a second suspect and seized a total of 48,200 Ethiopian birr, 211 Eritrean nakfas, different amounts of American dollars, and United Arab Emirates dirhams. The Lafto sub city police confirmed that all the money they took was fake and that they are still investigating, including looking into 500 Saudi Riyal notes.

The police department is warning the public to be careful while shopping and to watch out for anyone using fake money.

Recently, an Ethiopian private bank employee was arrested for printing fake money. Police arrested the suspect, Mubarak Saeed Hassan, in Harar city. Mubarak claims to be the district relations officer of a private bank.

The man paid six hundred fake Birr notes to buy lunch at a hotel in Shenkor Woreda. He gave sixty birr note as tip to a waiter at the hotel.
