Addis Ababa Trade Bureau has announced that it has imported onions from Tanzania. Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce Director of Communication Affairs Directorate, Mr. Atoya Ayele,has confirmed that they have imported onions from Tanzania in order to prevent a shortage of supply in the market for the upcoming Ethiopian New Year’s Eve.
He said that government is trying to ensure supply of onions at reasonable price at Sunday markets in the capital city. He added that the local onion yield had been affected because of heavy rains.
In Addis Ababa city, price of one kilogram of onion rose significantly last month. The capital city has been facing shortage and rise in prices of onions. Last month, Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce announced that onion products of different grades were being sold in Saturday markets for 40 to 60 birr per kilo. But some commercial establishments were selling it for up to 120 birr.
