The Addis Ababa city administration has fully lifted restrictions on taxi services. Starting this month, the Transport Bureau has removed limitations specifically for taxis that serve students. Additionally, taxi associations will now handle the licensing of these taxis.
The bureau made this announcement of taxi services during a meeting with relevant stakeholders about transportation issues, held on Friday, September 13, 2024, at the Nexus Hotel in Addis Ababa. The meeting aimed to discuss a three-month plan to address the city’s transportation shortages.
Mr. Ashenafi Seyoum, director of the Public Transport Organization and SMRIT Directorate, pointed out a significant gap between the city’s transportation needs and the available services. He emphasized that inefficient use of transport resources is a widespread issue. Moreover, he noted that increasing traffic congestion has worsened transportation challenges by limiting vehicle interactions.
