The Addis Ababa City Administration’s Trade Bureau is taking steps to manage inflation and ensure a stable supply of products. They plan to supply over 2 million liters of cooking oil. Mr. Shenet Ayele, the bureau’s public relations director, highlighted their commitment to stabilizing prices and preventing shortages for the upcoming New Year celebrations.

The Ethiopian New Year, known as Enkutatash, falls on September 11 in the Gregorian calendar. In 2024, people will celebrate Ethiopian New Year on Wednesday, September 11. This holiday marks the first day of the Ethiopian calendar.

Reportedly the bureau will provide essential goods, including 2 million liters of cooking oil, 36,000 quintals of sugar, 36,000 quintals of teff, 100,000 quintals of onions, 30,000 quintals of tomatoes, 3.5 million eggs, and 10,000 quintals of wheat flour.

The Addis Ababa bureau will organize product fairs and bazaars at three shopping centers from September 2 to September 10, 2024, to control the inflation. These events will connect consumers directly with producers. Additionally, the bureau has arranged for holiday shopping in regular market areas. Over 193 Sunday markets will also operate on regular days to accommodate shoppers.

Moreover, yesterday, the government of Ethiopia introduced new changes to its value-added tax (VAT) policy through Proclamation No. 1341/2016 to better support low-income households. This proclamation updates tax exemptions for essential services like water, electricity, and transportation.
