The Addis Ababa Driver and Vehicle Licensing and Control Authority has announced a significant increase in vehicle registration and licensing fees. This change will take effect on Monday, September 20, 2017, in all sub-districts of the city.
The new fee structure shared by the Addis Ababa Authority raises the cost of vehicle registration (BOLO) from 650 birr to 1,850 birr. The fee for name transfers will increase from 5,600 birr to 10,000 birr. For service changes, the fee will rise from 17,100 birr to 30,000 birr. Those needing to reissue a lost driver’s license will now pay between 750 birr and 5,000 birr.
This increase averages around 150%. The authority aims to align the fees with current economic conditions and administrative costs. They hope these adjustments will improve operational efficiency and enhance service delivery within the city’s transportation system.
Reportedly, Addis Ababa city will soon launch a plan to ban older vehicles from the city. This initiative targets vehicles that are 20 years old or older. Reports show that many older vehicles, such as Ladas, minibuses, and taxis, currently operate in public transport.
