Addis Ababa plans to purchase 100 electric buses to enhance and modernize its public transportation system. The transport office announced that it will implement various initiatives to improve the sector in the upcoming year, 2025.
Mr. Worku Desta, the deputy head of the Addis Ababa Transport Bureau, shared that the city administration typically acquires 200 to 300 buses each year to strengthen the transport network. However, he noted that a significant gap still exists between supply and the actual needs of the city. With the addition of these 100 new electric buses, the administration of Addis Ababa aims to further expand transportation services.
Last month, the diplomatic and consular missions in Addis Ababa, regional and international organizations were informed by the Ethiopian government that they would only import electric vehicles. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has written a letter to diplomatic missions and international organizations based in Addis Ababa.
Mr. Worku Desta highlighted that the lack of experience and interest in effectively utilizing the buses provided by the city contributes to ongoing challenges in the transportation sector. He urged that addressing the transportation issues in Addis Ababa requires not only government action but also active participation from community organizations.
